Academia-mania or widening participation? The German discussion on the future of higher education

In recent months, we had a strange discussion in Germany, where some participants considered the trend towards higher education as unnecessary, difficult and even dangerous for the future of the German labour market, because of a supposed looming lack of persons with vocational training. In the introduction to their new publication “Übergänge im Spannungsfeld von Expansion und Exklusion. Eine Analyse der Schnittstellen im deutschen Hochschulsystem” Ulf Banscherus and Margret Bülow-Schramm summarise this discussion nicely.
