Diversity of students, diversity of higher education institutions – are these processes interrelated?

By addressing new, divers target groups, higher education institutions develop different profiles and new study offers. Lifelong learning, former vocational training courses offered now as study programmes, specialisation, but also regional orientation leads to a new diversity in HEIs. How will that change our perspective on the classification of HEIs by research universities, universities of applied sciences, polytechnics etc.? How will it change what we consider to be a higher education institution? These questions are researched in a study conducted by CHE, Gütersloh, Germany.
